You do not have to face life's challenges alone

Strength and courage do not come from having all the answers, being fearless, or never making mistakes. They come from trusting that God is present, guiding you, and giving you what you need for each step forward.

Finding courage in God's presence

Joshua was not told to be strong because he was capable on his own. He was told to be strong because God promised, "For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9). Courage is not the absence of fear—it is moving forward in faith despite fear, knowing that God is walking with you.

Key Message:
"No matter what challenge, change, or uncertainty you face, God is with you. Trust Him, take the next step, and move forward with courage."

Who this message is for

This page aims to inspire and encourage anyone facing a difficult season of life. This includes people going through major life changes or uncertainty, leaders feeling the weight of responsibility, military members, veterans, and first responders facing challenging missions, parents striving to lead their families well, young adults stepping into new opportunities, individuals struggling with fear, self-doubt, or discouragement, and Christians seeking to grow in their faith. The message of Joshua 1:1–9 is particularly powerful for those who feel overwhelmed by what lies ahead.

Strength is continuing, courage is taking the next step

Joshua likely felt intimidated stepping into Moses' role. Yet God didn't tell him to be strong because he had all the qualifications. God told him to be strong because He would be with him. The lesson is that courage grows when we focus on God's presence rather than our limitations. Strength is continuing when it's hard. Courage is taking the next step when you're afraid. The greatest examples of courage are often not found in extraordinary moments, but in ordinary people who keep moving forward, trusting God one step at a time.

Move forward with hope and confidence

After reading "Be Strong and Courageous," I hope you leave with a renewed sense of hope, confidence, and faith in God, regardless of what you are facing. You do not need to have everything figured out before taking the next step. Just as Joshua faced an uncertain future, we all encounter situations that challenge us. The message of Joshua 1:1–9 reminds us that God's presence is greater than our fears. Take the next step you've been afraid to take, trust God more fully in a difficult situation, spend time in God's Word for guidance and strength, face challenges with courage instead of avoiding them, and encourage someone else who may be struggling.

Since I don't know what life's personal experiences I can share as examples. I will give some experiences I have been through and some illustrations of what has challenge me and brought me to my knees and of what "being strong and courageous" looks like in everyday life.

A Soldier Taking the Next Step:

A Soldier receives orders to a new duty station or is placed in a leadership position for the first time. They may not feel fully prepared, but they accept the responsibility, learn, adapt, and lead. Courage isn't the absence of uncertainty—it's moving forward despite it.

A Parent such as Myself Carrying the Load:

A parent works long hours, sacrifices personal comforts, and continues showing up for their family even when exhausted. Even if the parents are not together. Strength is often found in quiet perseverance rather than dramatic moments.

"A Single Parent Like Myself Carrying the Load:

As a single parent, carrying the load often means wearing multiple hats every day. I am the provider, protector, teacher, encourager, disciplinarian, and source of stability for my children. There are times when the responsibility feels overwhelming because there isn't always someone else to share the burden with. The decisions, sacrifices, and challenges often fall on my shoulders alone.

Being strong and courageous as a single parent doesn't mean I have all the answers or never feel exhausted. It means I continue showing up for my children even on the days when I feel tired, discouraged, or uncertain. It means putting their needs before my own, working hard to provide for them, and doing my best to guide them toward a better future.

There have been moments when I've questioned whether I was doing enough or whether I was capable of carrying the responsibilities placed before me. During those times, Joshua 1:9 serves as a reminder that I am not carrying this load by myself:

"Be strong and courageous... for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

That promise gives me strength when I feel weak and courage when I feel afraid. It reminds me that God sees every sacrifice, every late night, every difficult decision, and every effort I make for my family. Even when no one else notices, He does.

As a single parent, courage often isn't found in dramatic moments. It's found in the everyday choices to keep going, to keep believing, and to keep loving my children despite life's challenges. It's found in getting up each morning with determination, trusting that God will provide the strength needed for that day.

The lesson I want others to take away is this: Being strong and courageous as a single parent means faithfully carrying the load one day at a time. It means trusting God when the path is difficult, finding strength when I feel depleted, and continuing to lead my family with love and perseverance. My journey may not be easy, but with God's help, I can face each challenge with courage and confidence, knowing that I am never truly alone."

Recovering from Failure:

Someone loses a job, experiences a setback, or makes a significant mistake. Instead of giving up, they learn from the experience, trust God, and start again. That willingness to rise after falling is courage.

Recovering from Failure as a Single Parent

"One of the hardest lessons I've learned as a single parent is that failure doesn't just affect me—it can feel like it affects the people I love most. There have been times when I've questioned my decisions, worried about whether I was doing enough, or felt like I fell short of the parent I wanted to be. Carrying the responsibilities of both provider and caregiver can be overwhelming, and when mistakes happen, the weight of those failures can feel even heavier.

Yet, being strong and courageous doesn't mean I never struggle or make mistakes. It means I choose to get back up and keep moving forward. As a single parent, I've learned that failure is not a sign that I'm incapable; it's an opportunity to grow, learn, and become stronger. Some days, courage looks like simply getting out of bed, going to work, paying the bills, and continuing to show up for my children despite my doubts and fears.

Joshua 1:9 speaks directly to moments like these:

"Be strong and courageous... for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

When I feel discouraged by my shortcomings or setbacks, I remind myself that God never expected me to be perfect. He expects me to trust Him, remain faithful, and continue moving forward. My children do not need a perfect parent; they need a parent who loves them, sacrifices for them, and keeps trying even when life gets difficult.

Looking back, some of my greatest growth has come from the challenges and failures I once thought would break me. Those experiences taught me resilience, patience, humility, and a deeper dependence on God. They showed me that failure is not the end of my story—it is often the beginning of a new chapter.

The lesson I want others to take away is this: As a single parent, my failures do not define me. My perseverance does. Every day I continue to provide, guide, love, and support my children is proof that I have not given up. Through God's strength, I can rise above setbacks, learn from my mistakes, and move forward with courage, knowing that He is with me every step of the way."

Standing for What's Right:

A person refuses to compromise their values even when it costs them popularity, promotions, or acceptance. Moral courage is often harder than physical courage because it requires conviction when no one else is standing beside you.

Choosing to Stand with God and Marry the Woman He Blessed Me With

One of the most courageous decisions I have ever made was choosing to fully stand with God and commit my life to the woman He has blessed me with. As a single parent, I have carried many responsibilities on my own. There were seasons of struggle, uncertainty, loneliness, and moments when I questioned what the future would hold for me and my children. Through it all, God remained faithful.

For a long time, my focus was simply on being the best father I could be and providing stability for my family. I learned to rely on God through challenges, setbacks, and lessons that shaped me into the man I am today. Looking back, I can see that God was preparing my heart, strengthening my faith, and teaching me to trust His timing.

When God brought this incredible, godly woman into my life, I recognized that she was not just an answer to prayer but a blessing far greater than I could have imagined. She loves God, supports my faith, and embraces not only me but also the responsibilities and blessings that come with being part of my family's journey. Her character, faith, compassion, and commitment to God have shown me what a true partner in Christ looks like.

Choosing to marry her is about more than love—it's about obedience to God and building a future founded on Him. It is a commitment to lead our home according to God's Word, to grow together spiritually, and to create a legacy of faith for our family. While marriage is a major step and comes with its own challenges, I know that I do not walk into it alone. God has guided me to this point, and I trust Him to guide our future together.

Joshua 1:9 speaks directly to this season of my life:

"Be strong and courageous... for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

For me, being strong and courageous means stepping forward in faith, trusting God's plan, and embracing the future He has prepared. It means leaving behind fear, doubt, and past disappointments and choosing to walk confidently into the blessings God has placed before me.

Today, I stand grateful—not only for the journey that brought me here but for the woman God has placed beside me. She is a reminder of God's faithfulness, grace, and perfect timing. As we prepare to build a life together, my prayer is that our marriage honors God, strengthens our family, and serves as a testimony of what can happen when we trust Him completely.

My story is proof that God can take seasons of struggle, loneliness, and uncertainty and transform them into seasons of hope, love, and purpose. By standing with God and trusting His direction, I have found not only strength and courage but also a partner with whom I can walk in faith for the rest of my life.

Joshua 1:1–9: Be Strong and Courageous

Introduction

Joshua 1:1–9 marks a major transition in the history of Israel. Moses, the great leader who brought God's people out of Egypt, has died. Now God calls Joshua to lead the nation into the Promised Land. Joshua faces an enormous responsibility, but God gives him a powerful message: "Be strong and courageous."

This passage is not only about Joshua's leadership; it is also a message for believers today who face uncertainty, challenges, and new responsibilities.

  1. God Calls Ordinary People to Extraordinary Tasks (Joshua 1:1–2)

After Moses' death, God speaks directly to Joshua:

"Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan..."

Joshua had spent years serving under Moses, but now it was his turn to lead.

Application Today

Many people feel unqualified for what God is calling them to do. Whether it is leading a family, serving in ministry, mentoring others, or facing a difficult season, God often calls people who feel inadequate.

The lesson is simple:

  • God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called.
  • When one season ends, God begins another.
  • We cannot live in yesterday's victories; we must move forward in faith.

Ask yourself:

What is God asking me to step into that fear has been holding me back from doing?

  1. God's Promises Give Us Confidence (Joshua 1:3–5)

God promises Joshua:

"Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you."

God also assures him:

"I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee."

Joshua's confidence was not supposed to come from his own abilities but from God's promises.

Application Today

Life is full of uncertainty:

  • Financial struggles
  • Family problems
  • Health challenges
  • Career decisions
  • Spiritual battles

Our courage should not be based on circumstances but on God's faithfulness.

The same God who stood with Joshua stands with His people today.

When challenges arise, remember:

  • God's promises are greater than your fears.
  • God's presence is stronger than your obstacles.
  • God's faithfulness does not change.
  1. Strength and Courage Are Choices (Joshua 1:6–7)

Three times God tells Joshua:

"Be strong and courageous."

This repetition shows how important the command is.

Courage does not mean the absence of fear. Courage means moving forward despite fear because you trust God.

Application Today

Many people wait until they feel brave before acting. God tells Joshua to act in faith first.

Examples:

  • Forgive even when it is difficult.
  • Share your faith even when you are nervous.
  • Stand for what is right even when you are alone.
  • Continue praying even when answers seem delayed.

Faith often requires taking the first step before seeing the whole path.

  1. Success Comes Through Obedience to God's Word (Joshua 1:8)

God gives Joshua a strategy for success:

"This Book of the Law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night."

Joshua's success would not come through military strength alone but through obedience to God's Word.

Application Today

Many people define success by:

  • Money
  • Popularity
  • Status
  • Achievement

God defines success differently.

A successful life is one that obeys Him.

Practical ways to apply this verse:

  • Read Scripture daily.
  • Memorize Bible verses.
  • Talk about God's Word with others.
  • Apply what you learn.
  • Pray for wisdom to live it out.

The Bible should not simply inform us—it should transform us.

  1. God's Presence Is Our Greatest Source of Courage (Joshua 1:9)

God concludes with a powerful promise:

"For the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."

This is the foundation of Joshua's courage.

God did not promise an easy journey.

He promised His presence.

Application Today

We all face "Jordan Rivers":

  • Difficult decisions
  • New responsibilities
  • Unexpected losses
  • Personal struggles

The good news is that we never face them alone.

God's presence gives:

  • Peace in uncertainty
  • Strength in weakness
  • Hope in discouragement
  • Courage in fear

When we remember that God is with us, we can move forward confidently.

Joshua 1:1–9 teaches four powerful truths:

  1. God calls us to move forward in faith.
  2. God's promises are greater than our fears.
  3. Courage comes from trusting God and obeying Him.
  4. God's presence is the source of our strength.

The message God gave Joshua is still relevant today:

"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." (Joshua 1:9)

No matter what battle, transition, or challenge you are facing, God is calling you to trust Him, obey His Word, and walk forward with courage because He goes with you every step of the way.

Amen.

Joshua 1:1–9 Explained for everyone.

Introduction

Joshua 1:1–9 is about facing life's challenges with faith, courage, and trust in God.

At this point in the story, Moses has died, and Joshua is now responsible for leading God's people into the Promised Land. Joshua is probably feeling overwhelmed, nervous, and unsure of himself. God knows this, so He speaks directly to Joshua and gives him encouragement and direction.

The same lessons God taught Joshua can help us today.

  1. Life Will Bring Changes We Don't Expect

Verse 2

"Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise..."

Joshua had lost his mentor, leader, and friend. Life had suddenly changed.

We experience similar moments:

  • Losing a loved one
  • Changing jobs
  • Moving to a new place
  • Retirement
  • Health problems
  • Family changes

God's message to Joshua was simple:

"Don't stay stuck in what has happened. It's time to move forward."

Application Today

It's okay to grieve and feel disappointed, but eventually we must trust God and take the next step.

Sometimes our greatest growth happens after life's biggest changes.

  1. God Goes With Us Wherever We Go

Verse 5

"I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."

This is one of the most comforting promises in the Bible.

God didn't promise Joshua an easy life.

He promised Joshua His presence.

Application Today

When you feel:

  • Alone
  • Afraid
  • Discouraged
  • Overwhelmed

Remember that God is with you.

You may not always see how things will work out, but you never face life's struggles by yourself.

  1. Courage Is Doing What's Right Even When You're Afraid

Verses 6, 7, and 9

"Be strong and courageous."

God repeats this three times because He knows Joshua is scared.

Courage doesn't mean you're fearless.

Courage means you trust God enough to move forward despite your fear.

Application Today

Sometimes courage means:

  • Applying for the job.
  • Starting over after failure.
  • Standing up for what is right.
  • Forgiving someone who hurt you.
  • Sharing your faith.
  • Taking care of your family during difficult times.

Fear says, "What if I fail?"

Faith says, "What if God helps me succeed?"

  1. God's Word Helps Us Make Good Decisions

Verse 8

"This Book of the Law shall not depart out of thy mouth..."

God tells Joshua to stay close to His Word.

Why?

Because people make better decisions when they follow God's wisdom.

Application Today

The Bible helps us:

  • Handle relationships
  • Manage money wisely
  • Make moral decisions
  • Find peace during stress
  • Understand God's purpose

Just as we need food every day, we need God's Word every day.

A few minutes reading Scripture can change the direction of your entire day.

  1. Real Success Comes from Following God

Verse 8

"Then you will be prosperous and successful."

Many people think success means:

  • More money
  • Bigger houses
  • More possessions
  • More recognition

God's definition of success is different.

A successful person is someone who:

  • Trusts God
  • Obeys God
  • Loves others
  • Lives with integrity

You can be wealthy and unsuccessful in God's eyes.

You can also have very little and be incredibly successful because you are faithful to Him.

  1. God Wants Us to Move Forward, Not Live in Fear

Verse 9

"Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."

Fear can keep us from:

  • Pursuing dreams
  • Serving others
  • Growing spiritually
  • Becoming who God created us to be

God's answer to fear is not self-confidence.

It's God-confidence.

Application Today

Instead of saying:

  • "I can't do this."
  • "I'm not good enough."
  • "What if I fail?"

Try saying:

  • "God will help me."
  • "God is with me."
  • "I'll trust Him one step at a time."

Main Lesson

Joshua 1:1–9 teaches us that life will bring challenges, changes, and uncertainty, but God calls us to trust Him, stay close to His Word, and move forward with courage.

The heart of the passage is this:

When you don't know what tomorrow holds, remember Who holds tomorrow.

God's message to Joshua is His message to us today:

Be strong. Be courageous. Trust Me. I am with you wherever you go.

Conclusion

Joshua 1:1–9 is a powerful reminder that strength and courage are not found in our own abilities but in our faith and trust in God. Just as Joshua faced uncertainty, responsibility, and challenges, we too encounter situations that test our confidence and determination. God's message to Joshua remains relevant today: do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, and do not give up.

True courage is choosing to move forward even when the path ahead is unclear. It is trusting God's promises, relying on His guidance, and believing that His presence is enough to carry us through every challenge. Whether we are leading others, facing personal struggles, making difficult decisions, or stepping into a new season of life, we can find strength in knowing that God is with us.

As you go forward, remember that courage is not the absence of fear—it is faith in action. Trust God, stay grounded in His Word, and take the next step with confidence. The same God who encouraged Joshua is still encouraging His people today:

"Be strong and courageous... for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." — Joshua 1:9

May this truth inspire you to face life's challenges with faith, lead with confidence, and walk boldly into the future God has prepared for you.
